Series name: Kingdom Hearts
Canon notes: Sora is an AU incarnate from [community profile] bravenewworld! Brave New World (shortened to BNW from here on out to save on word count) is set in a Pokemon universe in which 500 years before the game start, the Pokemon got angry at humans and tried to wipe them out. Most of human civilization was destroyed, but a peace was brokered at the eleventh hour. Since then, humanity's been slowly on the rise and occasionally there are humans born with special, pokemon-like abilities called Enlightens (I'll say more in species section, but think of X-men Mutants but more Pokemon related). Sora is being pulled from right before the start of the game, for simplicity sake.

Species: Human/Enlighten

Enlightens in BNW are sort of like the Pokemon equivalent to X-Men mutants. They're born human and develop unique powers thanks to a mutation in their genetics. Some Enlightens look completely human, while others not so much - especially as their powers grow (though Sora still looks human for the most part). And as you can guess, their abilities line up with the pokemon types we know and love in the game franchise.

History:
Canon History

A lot of Sora's early basic canon history is the same. He was born on some isolated tropical islands in a village called Destiny, he was best friends with Riku and later Kairi, and when he was about 14 his home was destroyed. Of course being an AU, there's some changes:

  • Instead of the Destiny Islands being their own isolated world like in KH, they're a part of the BNW's world. Otherwise the village probably is mostly the same beyond the flora and fauna having pokemon. I'll be blunt: Sora ate a lot of beloved fish pokemon.

  • The encounters with Terra and Aqua never happened. Ven and Sora's heart were also never connected together. Those three were never apped in Sora's time at BNW, so what their status in the AU is unknown.

  • Instead of Roxas being his Nobody, he was Sora's twin brother. Namine was also Kairi's sister instead of being her Nobody. This obviously had a strong effect on Sora's childhood as having a twin sibling does that, and it makes his list for most precious people in his life a bit longer.

  • Heartless did not attack Destiny Islands. The village was destroyed when a local population of Zubats were disturbed and went on the attack. Yes. Zubats.

  • While trying to escape, his enlighten powers activated and saved him from death. He managed to get to a boat full of villagers escaping. However, the waters were rough and the fishing boat capsized. He lost consciousness shortly after.

  • Sometime later he washed up onshore on the mainland near the walled city of Union. Two rangers named Donald and Goofy found him and took him back to Union. When he woke up and asked about his village, they...completely didn't believe his story and figured he'd hit his head so he was saying funny things. This is partly because Donald and Goofy are not bright no matter the universe, and also because since Union has been isolated for the last five hundred years- they had a strong belief that they were the last humans left. But mostly it was because Donald and Goofy were idiots, okay.

  • But even though they were stupid, they were kind enough to help Sora look for anyone he knew in Union. Which was...no one. After a few weeks of fruitless searches, Donald and Goofy had to return to their ranger duties and had no means to raise a kid themselves, so they left Sora at a local orphanage with some money and a Shinx Pokemon named Simba for companionship. Before departing, they cautioned him not to go spreading around his story about being from outside of Union because it could stir up trouble (plus you know, they still didn't believe him). After that, Donald and Goofy were never apped so...let's say they are still lost in the wilderness somewhere looking for Mickey. Sure.

  • For the next year after that, Sora stayed at the orphanage. Due to Sora keeping quiet about his origins, the matrons believed Sora was having memory problems from trauma, and that's why they were having trouble finding any real information about him. In the meantime, Sora became fixated with the idea of joining the Rangers (people who surveyed the lands beyond Unions walls), since that seemed like his best shot at finding a way back home.

    Personality:
When a person first meets Sora, it's not uncommon for someone to completely overlook him. He's young, short, skinny and all in all pretty average in terms of looks. Being rather average in intelligence and not particularly driven unless pushed, it's rather no surprise many people seem dismiss him right out of hand. Even his powers as a fledging Enlighten are pretty underwhelming, being neither flashy, powerful or even that reliable.

But what Sora lacks in sheer awe factor, he seems to make up for in friendliness and an outgoing nature. Sora has an easy time interacting with new people and making friends wherever he goes. Unless there's something about a person that puts him ill at ease, he seems to approach most new encounters as a chance to make another friend.

While this may sound like Sora is a gullible idiot that'll get himself killed one day, he's actually surprisingly perceptive about people's motives- even more so than many of his fellow comrades. A novel once described that when he meets a new person he spends some time mentally judging them into three different categories: good, bad and suspicious for those rare people that he has trouble pinpointing their true alignment. But aside from those rare cases, all in all his perception and intuition works extremely well and it's hard for someone with malicious intent to pull the wool over his eyes.

Intelligence wise, Sora is probably best described as simple. Complicated concepts tend to go over his head, and he's nowhere near as philosophical as his friend Riku. A few characters remark that he can be slow on the uptake, and it's not without merit. However he isn't without his clever moments. His simple way of thinking frequently benefits him too, allowing him to cut through to the heart of the matter of an issue instead of getting stuck on the smaller details.

All in all, when things are peaceful Sora is a boy at peace. While he enjoys adventure as much as any teenage boy, he seems most content just spending a quiet fun day with his friends. While Riku originally wanted to leave the islands with zero intent or desire to return one day, Sora seems to hang onto the dream that one day he'll get to return home with his friends. Having that dream threatened or seemingly taken away often results in Sora getting depressed or more easily agitated.

While the past year of Sora's life have made him grow and mature in a lot of ways, he's still very much a kid. He gets easily excited about new things and just as quickly angry over little things that more mature people overlook. He can be competitive and do bratty things like stick out his tongue or being a complete smart mouth. When something bothers him enough, he'll become extremely stubborn and not let it go. He also has a tendency to get stuck in the moment and forget the bigger picture- which sometimes lands him into serious trouble. All in all, he's a good kid, but very much a kid.

Of course all these above mentioned personality traits match how he acts in canon. And since this Sora is from an AU, a question is how does he differ?

Several ways. First of all, unlike canon Sora, BNW!Sora was never chosen to do anything. Sure, he had special powers awaken, but he is far from the only Enlighten in his world. There was no trumpeting call to duty regarding saving the universe or protecting against darkness. Sora never had to fight in a war, or forced to make the hard choices that he had to make. But on the other hand, he never had a chance to make all the friends he did, or have his horizons expand from his journeys. He is much more naive about what is out there in the world (much like Sora in the first Kingdom Hearts). On the other hand, he feels much less compelled to get in the middle of business that doesn't directly involve him. He still has the more typical viewpoint of a teenage civilian than any sort of hero, such as things like fighting crime is something for the cops, not him. Would he still step in if there was something going on right in front of him? Most likely. But this Sora isn't about to run a crusade against darkness anytime soon.

Due to him being feel compelled to hide his origins, Sora's had a harder time establishing strong bonds in his past year of life. He doesn't know anyone in Union, and while the other people at the orphanage and his school find him friendly enough- there's no shaking that there was just something odd about him, in their eyes. Union was a place that had been under extreme isolation for the past five hundred years- isolation to the point they had been convinced they were the last humans in the world. As such, they had absolutely no frame of reference to recognize unfamiliarity to their customs due to being a foreigner. So Sora's different way of speaking, his gestures, his lack of basic Union cultural knowledge would often be interpreted as signs that Sora was either very odd or very stupid instead of being the telltale signs of being from elsewhere. Which would make many people a bit more reluctant to befriend him.

This has caused Sora to feel rather isolated and alone in his new city. Which for a kid that relies on his friends for strength? That's no small thing. It's made his desire to find a way home into a full blown fixation. He's convinced himself that all he has to do is get himself home and then everything would be just fine. At this point, he refuses to acknowledge the very definite possibility that there may be nothing left of his hometown. In his goals of regain what he lost in his home and with no one to really keep him in check, he's also become rather reckless. Anything that might lead to finding his way back home is worth trying, even if it's absolutely dangerous.

    Abilities:
This version of Sora has none of his canon abilities: no keyblade, no elemental magic, no posse of disney characters. Instead he has a small set of abilities as an Enlighten! Type wise, he is a Flying/Psychic. This manifests in the following abilities:

  • Kindred Soul: Sora is extremely adept at communicating and bonding with pokemon (or animals).
  • Low Empath: Sora will be able to pick on on whether or not someone has malicious intent or feelings. This has to be in person in order to work, the ability does not work over the network or at long distance.
  • Agility: Sora can move very quickly for short periods of time. These periods currently last about 5 to 10 seconds.
  • High Jump: Sora can jump much higher than a normal person and take very little fall damage.
  • Offense Emotions: He can do offensive telekinetic attacks that are lashing out of strong negative emotions. For example; feeling sadness can cause things around him to become heavier and harder to move, anger can cause him to psychically cut his target, and conflicted emotions and/or fear can cause him to either blow up objects around him or ineffectively splash water on them. It's a toss-up what it'll be. The strength of this power relies on how strongly he's feeling the emotion on the time, and strong surges of emotion may cause the power to get set off involuntarily. But when would that ever happen with an emotional 15 year old with a rough life situation, right? 8D;;;;

Sora's powers are capable of growing as time goes on, but that's probably unlikely to happen in Drift Fleet since there's much less fighting than in BNW.
